Birds in flight

Day Fifteen - Gone walkies

I am a touch sad to see that a drawing of a boy walking a dog along the sea front has been removed from the walls of the Horsebridge Centre…

An article about Drawing Whitstable has been published in the Whitstable Gazette - available from all good newsagents...or see below.

Tuesday 9 March 2010

As those who take classes at the Horsebridge Centre will know, my drawings have now reached the top floor! Please pop up and take a peek!

UPDATE - New Schedule!

UPDATE
I am conscious that I keep missing visitors to the Drawing Whitstable project - sorry if this has included you! From today on, I will be in the Horsebridge Centre (somewhere) daily between 11-2pm.

On Thursday 18, I will be present all day and offering the public an opportunity to own one of their favourite pieces from the Drawing Whitstable project.

Sunday 7 March 2010

Day Ten

The ultimate goal…

Saturday 6 March 2010

Day Nine

Saturday is spent working at the Stanley Picker Gallery in Kingston, South West London, however I return to Whitstable in time to join the tail end of the ‘Short Notice’ private view. The Horsebridge is buzzing and I chat to some amazing characters, but the highlight has to be meeting a young artist named Sam, who has recently started line-drawing. I hope that he continues to find inspiration in all that surrounds him!

Friday 5 March 2010

Day Eight

Up early, I sketch the town awaking, then make only a brief stop at the gallery, to update the wall before stocking up on liquorice and heading to London. On this sunny afternoon, there are few others at the station…

Thursday 4 March 2010

Day Seven

Moving on up...

Bang Clang Bash Bang

A mysterious clanging dominates my headspace in the wee hours of March 4.

Wednesday 3 March 2010

Day Six

Drawings climb the stairs to the cafĂ© where the actual and the observed combine…

Monday 1 March 2010

Day Four (Locked out)

Rising early, I embraced the morning sunshine, raised spirits and opportunity do a few sketches in town before heading to the Horsebridge to hang my latest observations. I followed this with an art-stroll through town, being particularly struck by the dynamic prints on show at the Fish Slab Gallery and after conversations about printing, pens and comice pears, all was looking good for some afternoon pen-on-paper action…until annoyance struck and I discovered that my house lock had jammed, leaving me out in the cold, with a bag of vegetables and waiting for a locksmith! Chilly feet and a need to let off steam drove me into the Duke, where a glass of wine accompanied an encounter with a stuffed monkey…strangely enough this is the second example of a taxidermists monkey work that I have seen since arriving in town...is there more than one or perhaps this is an underground/above ground trend??

Sunday 28 February 2010

Day Three

A rainy day cleared the streets of Whitstable and brought the sea to the beach in crashing waves...some excellent drawing weather!

Saturday 27 February 2010

Saturday Samba!

This afternoon, I got in touch with my musical roots and attended a free taster session with Samba Pelo Mar in the roof of the Horsebridge. After 2 hours of drum banging, bell chiming and moving to the beat I was both knackered and elated. Samba Pelo Mar will be playing a Haiti benefit gig on Sunday 7th March outside Zizi's restaurant 2pm-3pm.I recommend that you check them out! www.sambapelomar.com

Day two!

Today is my second day in Whitstable and pen and paper in hand, my observations have so far been centred around Harbour Street and the blustery sea front. I'm currently sitting in the foyer of the Horsebridge, where I've just finished putting up the results of yesterday afternoon and this morning's adventures - please drop and say hello!

Drawing Whitstable: Feb 26 - March 19, 2010

Hello!

I am a visual artist, living and working in London, but whose heart belongs to the sea. My practice, which is based around observationalline-drawings and often accompanied by text, focuses on the anonymity of the passer-by, the relationships between individuals, the artist, subject and observer, their stories, journeys and perceptions of themselves and each other.

From February 26 to March 19, I will be exploring this obsession out and about in Whitstable - observing, documenting and drawing. I hope that through this I might create a catalogue of daily life in a working seaside town outside of the summer season, with which permanent residents can engage and through which tourists and visitors alike can discover the heart of the community.

As the project progresses, documentation and artworks will be hung in the stairwell of the Horsebridge Arts Centre. Please drop by and check them out - you never know, you may catch a glimpse of yourself!

A list of ‘off-site visit’ dates will be available from the front desk, offering the public an opportunity to discuss the artwork, to actively engage with the creative process and join me for some observational drawing.
